What does it cost to replace a drivers license in Alberta?
$28 CAD. This is the maximum fee a registry agent is legally allowed charge to have a replacement drivers license issued to you.
This is also the current cost to have your personal information changed on the card. For example, your name or address. The process is the same.
If the replacement is due to theft, it is important that you report the stolen card to the police as soon as possible.
What Do I Need to Replace an Alberta Driver’s License?
To get a replacement driver’s license, you will need 2 pieces of identification such as birth certificate, passport, Social Insurance Card, Credit Card, a recent T4 slip, your Current Tax Return or Tax Assessment.
A signature and birthdate needs to be in the mix when you bring your 2 pieces of ID. The best approach is to go to the registry office with as many forms of ID as you can to prove your identification and current address.
How Long Does it Take to get a Replacement Alberta Drivers License or ID Card?
It generally takes 21 days or less to receive the replacement card in the mail. You will be issued a temporary drivers license or ID that is perfectly valid and legal in the mean time. It may, however, cause minor inconveniences where photo ID is required. Plan accordingly.
Can You get a Replacement Drivers License Online in Alberta?
No. In most cases, you must go to a registry agent in person to get a replacement for a lost, damaged or stolen drivers license.
However, there is technically an exception to this. It is possible to get a replacement drivers license online in Alberta.
You can only get a replacement card online if you are outside the province, or you have a medical condition or disability. In either case, you are required to provide documentation to prove your inability to attend a registry office in person.
