There is not a one size fits all number of demerits for speeding in Alberta.

The amount of demerit points added to your driving record is based on how fast you were speeding. More km/h over the speed limit is more demerits given.

To be clear, these are not the speeds at which you were driving. These are the amounts over the speed limit you were driving.

For example: If the speed limit were 50km/h and you got a speeding ticket doing 60km/h, you exceeded the speed limit by 10km/h. According to the chart, you would receive 0 demerits.

  • Exceeding speed limit by up to 15 km/h: 0 demerit points
  • Exceeding speed limit by 16 to 30 km/h: 2 demerit points
  • Exceeding speed limit by 31 to 50 km/h: 3 demerit points
  • Exceeding speed limit by 51 or more km/h: 6 demerit points
