Is Vasectomy Covered In Alberta?

doctor preparing for vasectomy. Vasectomies are covered by alberta health care.

The Alberta Health Care Program can be nuanced when it comes to what is covered or not covered.

In general, the main idea is to cover urgent and medically necessary procedures, but not things deemed voluntary or cosmetic.

That being said, there is a lot of grey area and overlap, and it’s not perfectly black and white.

Are Vasectomies covered by Alberta Health Care?

Yes, Vasectomies are covered under Alberta Health Care for a traditional vasectomy with a needle anesthesia.

However, you may be required to pay an out of pocket fee for the no-needle anesthesia.

When I had my vasectomy in a small rural Alberta town clinic, I needed my Alberta Health Care card to cover the procedure, and $100 cash. I chose the no needle option.

This fee may be higher at other clinics, but it is generally between $100 and $200.

You may even choose to be sedated, which has an even higher fee, usually around $250.

Most Alberta clinics are very similar.

While the operation was considered ”no needle”, this refers to anesthesia.

It is interesting to note that today’s technology uses a ”no scalpel” procedure. Even if you choose the free option (covered by Alberta Health Insurance).

Do I Need A Referral To Get A Vasectomy In Alberta?

Talk to your doctor. Some doctors will do vasectomies and will set up an appointment. If your doctor does not do vasectomies themselves, then yes, you will need a doctor referral.

In my case, the doctor sent a referral to the clinic, then the clinic contacted me to set up a consultation.

You always need a consultation beforehand to make sure you have no doubts, and are fully aware of the pros and cons of a vasectomy.

In Summary:

  • Vasectomies are covered under the Alberta Health Insurance Plan at no cost to you. All you need is an Alberta Health Care Card, a doctor referral, and a consultation.
  • For an extra fee, out of pocket, you have the option of no needle freezing (anesthesia), or sedation.
